Types of Electrical Testing

RCD Safety Switch - test and tag

At Jim’s Test & Tag, we are familiar with all the different types of electrical testing. That’s why we offer electrical safety testing services to businesses all around Australia. If you’d like to know more about the electrical inspection work we do, check out the rest of our blog.

1) Electrical Testing and Tagging

Out of all the types of electrical testing, testing and tagging is our most popular and most broad service. Testing and tagging is a broad term that refers to the inspection and labeling of electrical appliances.

We conduct testing according to the AS/NZS 3760:2010 standard for the in-services safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment. As a part of our test and tag work, we conduct visual inspections, earth continuity tests, insulation resistance tests, leakage tests, and more. The specific work we do will vary based on your device and environment.

There is a wide range of appliances and equipment you can have inspected, including microwaves, fridges, computers, and other portable appliances. That leads to our next type of test….

2) Portable Appliance Testing

PAT testing is a method in which our technicians test equipment that is portable. This service is really popular in the construction industry where portable equipment is a necessity. Commercial cleaners are another popular client. Our team members inspect steam cleaners, vacuum cleaners, drills, angle grinders, as well as general home and office equipment like kitchen appliances.

During each PAT test, we can carry out a leakage current test to ensure the required level of insulation is present.

3) RCD Testing

Safety switch testing is an essential type of electrical testing. Without a functional RCD, the occupants in your building could be exposed to electrical shock. RCDs need to be inspected and tested at least once every 12 months by a trained technician. There are more requirements for various types of RCDS and working environments, so please contact us if you have any questions about interval requirements.
