Occupational Health and Safety Legislation in Vic – What you need to know
The Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 provides all the rules and regulations required by Victorian businesses to comply with to ensure their workplace is a safe and healthy environment for everyone.
The Victorian OHS act states your duty of care as:
“An employer must, as far is reasonably practical, provide and maintain for employees of the employer a working environment that is safe and without risk to health”
The act also states that businesses are required to have all electrical equipment is regularly tested and maintained to ensure that it is safe to use.
How often do I need it done?
To remain compliant with Victorian OHS standards, you must regularly test all electrical equipment in your work environment.
However, different work environments and electrical equipment have different regulations for how often they should be tested and maintained.
Generally, portable appliances should be tested every 6 months while RCDs should be tested every 3 months.
The construction industry has its own standards in regards to the required frequency of their electrical equipment due to the hostility and risks involved in the industry.
- Electrical appliances testing is required 3 monthly
- RCDs require an ‘operating time test’ (electrical trip) once a month
